Data visualization is the practice of presenting numbers as pictures — bars, lines, maps, heatmaps, gauges, tables with colour — so the eye can do the comparing. A list of 50 store revenues takes a minute to scan; a ranked bar chart shows the best, the worst and the gap in a second. Visualization is not decoration; it is compression.
It matters wherever people have to act on numbers quickly. A distributor’s warehouse manager scanning a table of 400 stock lines will miss the three that are about to run out; the same data as a colour-coded cover chart makes them obvious. A finance director reading a line chart of cash over 18 months sees the seasonality that a monthly spreadsheet hides. The right picture changes what people notice.
Choosing the chart is most of the craft. Bars compare categories, lines show change over time, scatter plots relate two measures, tables look values up, and pie charts work for two or three parts of a whole and rarely more. Common mistakes are truncated axes that exaggerate change, rainbow colours that mean nothing, and 3D effects that hide the numbers. Rule of thumb: one message per chart, one accent colour for the thing that matters, grey for context.
