Ad hoc reporting covers the questions nobody planned for: “how many customers bought both products last quarter?”, “what did the Eid promotion do to basket size?”, “which suppliers were late more than twice?”. Each needs an answer once, quickly, and then perhaps never again. Ad hoc reports sit alongside the fixed set of dashboards and scheduled reports that run every week.
They matter because most real decisions start as a one-off question. When ad hoc questions are slow — an export, a spreadsheet, two days of waiting — people stop asking and decide on instinct. When they take a minute, managers ask more questions and get better answers.
The risk is sprawl and disagreement. Twenty quick spreadsheets, each built from a different export with a different idea of “active customer”, will contradict each other and the dashboards. The fix is to answer ad hoc questions from the same governed tables and metrics the dashboards use, and to promote the ones that keep coming back into a proper dashboard. Rule of thumb: if the same ad hoc question is asked three months running, it deserves a page.
In Klayara, ad hoc questions are answered by exploring a table, dragging columns onto a chart or building a pivot — or, with Klayara AI, by asking in plain words and getting a real chart within your permissions. Any answer can be pinned to a dashboard or scheduled. See data exploration and ask your data.
