Text to SQL

Text to SQL is AI that turns a plain-language request, such as “total sales per month”, into a database query a person can review and run.

Text to SQL is the use of AI to turn a request written in plain words into a database query. You type “total sales per month for the last year” or “customers with no order in 90 days”, and the tool writes the query that fetches it. SQL is the language most databases understand, so text to SQL is a translator between how people ask and how databases answer.

It matters for two groups. People who already write queries get a fast first draft and spend their time checking rather than typing. People who are learning see how a request becomes a query, which teaches faster than a manual. For everyone else, text to SQL usually sits behind the scenes: a good BI tool lets most people build charts without ever seeing a query.

The caution is that a query can be correct and still be wrong for the business, or correct and far too heavy to run every time a dashboard opens. A query that scans a whole sales history with no date filter may work in testing and slow everything down at month end. Rule of thumb: treat a generated query as a draft, compare it with what you meant, check how heavy it is before saving, and keep the AI away from the data itself; it needs table and column names, not your rows.

In Klayara, the AI query assistant writes a query from a sentence, fixes or speeds up one that fails or is flagged as heavy, and explains any query in plain words. A free query check on every plan rates each query before it can be saved.
